MISSÃO BATISTA DO PELOURINHO’s HISTORY

The dream became reality. In 1990 God opened the doors and we got in there. We were a group of varies churches and denominations, starting a battle against the sin wickedness that dominated that place. There weren’t one street, one large house, or one small house that we didn’t visit. Everyone heard the God’s Word.
We started, then, DAWN with GOD. This is an evangelistic action that happens during the dawn in the regions that surround Pelourinho. When the conversions started we asked ourselves: what should we do? We cried to God and he gave us the Sítio Boas Novas de Salvação (Siege Good News of Salvation), Where, in a close future, a CENTER of RESSOCIALIZATION will be built, to people who assume a compromise with Christ and are wishing to change their lives, be supported, restored, receive professional training and presented again to society as a live testimony of God’s power.
There came the restoration of Pelourinho. We had to leave the first place we used to offer service and begin to make services in other places because of the street’s physical restoration needs, we were: in a locksmith’s- open air (as courtesy from the owner); inside a room of the old Hotel Guaciara lent by IPAC - Instituto do Patrimônio Artístico e Cultural ( Institute of Artistic and Cultural Patrimony); at the Praça da Sé (a Square); and soon after, inside a room at Chile Street. God gave us, lent by Baptist Church Dois de Julho, through Pr. Ezequiel Monteiro, a place at Sodré Street 12 (Corner with Carlos Gomes). There we had our meetings for eight years: services, Bible Teachings on Sunday morning, Evangelism and other projects. In 2005, the temple of Baptist Church Gileade was opened, on Centenário Avenue. This Church was generated as a permanent support to Missão Pelourinho, which work in many areas, examples: Evangelism, Disciple teaching, Counseling, Deliverance, Compassion, Bible teaching and other ministries. At Sodré Street, in the Missão Pelourinho’s Premises, continues the Project S.O.P.A. on Wednesday followed by a service.
We have as an aim to reach with the Gospel the whole Historic Center of Salvador. During theses years of work, we’ve reached Comércio, Ladeira da Montanha, Ladeira da Conceição, Preguiça, Sodré and surrounding places. Certainly we’ll reach our goal, in Jesus Christ we have guaranteed victory.
God gave us the privilege of realizing an event called “CHIRSTMAS DINNER with PEOPLE in NEED” in December of every year since 1997. We want to give a little bit of our joy to the ones who are rejected, having as the main objective to show Jesus, the hope to the World. In the years of 1996, 1995 and 1997 The Christmas Dinner with People in Need happened in a Public Square, looking forward to reach a 1.000 people who dwell in the street. The Fourth Christmas Dinner took place at the Casa de Passagem do Imigrante, place of gathering of the worst criminals. In Authorities words, “garbage and human deject”.
The mendicants took off the streets, the baby or ancients, insane people, HIV positive, tuberculous, cancerous are placed there.
We suspended for a while the “Dawn with God” because of City-law forbade the distribution of food in the street. We started to develop an evangelistic and social work inside the Casa de Passagem do Migrante, and we stood there for one year. We made services every First Sunday of each Month and Bible studies every day of the week, till when the authorities closed the Casa dos Imigrantes and replaced the people who were living there. While we were working in that place, there were many conversions and once more the Church of Christ had victory.

We seeded the Word many with tears, we already can see the seed grow and some give fruits. Doing it we accomplish God’s Word written in Psalms 126:5-6. The Missão Batista do Pelourinho has this saying: USA-ME (Use-me) U – Unidade (Unit), S – Santidade (Holiness), A – Amor (Love), ME – Meditação nas Escrituras (Meditation on the Scriptures). If our lives are filled with these words, certainly we’ll be faithful servants and God will use us to His praise and Glory.
To God be the honor and all of the glory forever. Amem.
